Iowa Acuity is an iPhone/iPad app that digitizes the E-ETDRS/ETDRS visual acuity exam — the same type of test used in eye clinics and vision research — so anyone can take it on their own, or under a clinician's supervision. Instead of relying on a printed chart and an examiner to give instructions, verify distance, and check that the correct eye is covered, AI Acuity automates the entire process: • Voice-guided testing: the app speaks instructions and listens to the patient's spoken responses in real time, enabling a fully hands-free experience from start to finish. • Camera-based verification (AR): using the front camera, the app automatically checks that the device is at the correct distance and that the right eye is covered, pausing the test and prompting corrections whenever conditions aren't met. • Real clinical protocol: follows the official ETDRS screening-and-threshold logic, testing the right eye, left eye, and both eyes together, and automatically computing letter score, Snellen equivalent, and LogMAR. • Smart response recognition: interprets what the user says — even with mispronunciations or imperfect speech recognition — using local heuristics and, when needed, AI (OpenAI) to resolve ambiguous responses. • History and reporting: saves every test session, generates structured reports, and lets users export data (CSV) for clinical follow-up or comparison against a manual reference exam — useful for personal tracking as well as research purposes. It's built for patients who want an easy, guided vision check; for clinicians or study staff who need to validate results; and for researchers comparing app results against a manual gold standard.
